The surf glitterati gathered on the Gold Coast last night for the 2012 ASP World Surfing Awards and witnessed a few poignant moments...

The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre played host to the world’s best surfers at last night's 2012 ASP World Surfing Awards. The main event saw ASP World Title winners Kelly Slater and Carissa Moore officially crowned the 2011 King and Queen of Surfing – Kelly Slater for an incredible 11th time. But it wasn't just Moore representing Red Bull up on the stage. Sally Fitzgibbons, Julian Wilson, Silvana Lima and Michel Bourez were all among the night's winners.

Arguably, though, the night belonged to Bethany Hamilton. She lost her left arm in a shark attack in 2003 at the age of 13 but overcame her trauma to build a career for herself as a creditable professional surfer – a story that was told in last year's film, Soul Surfer. Bethany was presented with the ASP Peter Whittaker Award (named after the former ASP International CEO who died in 2006) last night in recognition of her achievements to date.

Another tear-jerking moment came when surfing rebel Larry Bertlemann – who has a skateboard trick named after one of his surfing moves – was awarded the ASP Lifetime Membership Award. After a tough start to the noughties Bertlemann has got his life back on track and the surfing community were pleased to be able to celebrate the great man's triumphs.

The ASP World Surfing Awards also included a few new prizes voted for by fans and the surfers themselves, with Sally Fitzgibbons and Michel Bourez winning the ASP Surfers’ Surfer categories.
