Gee Atherton is the 2010 Downhill Mountain Bike champion after a nail-biting finish to the final round of competition in New York state, USA.

Atherton won the event in Windham with a time of 2:28.28 to see off his closest rival, Greg Minnaar by less than four tenths of a second. The win was the 25-year-old’s third of the season and gave him overall victory after a close battle with Minnaar.

'I am so stoked to have claimed something I have put so much time and effort into' – Gee

“This title has been a long time coming,” Atherton said. “We’ve been in contention before but never this close. I am so stoked to have claimed something I have put so much time and effort into.”

With victory, Atherton took his season tally to 1229 points, just 44 ahead of South African Minnaar. Sam Blenkinsop finished a distant third in the series with 864 points.

Gee wasn’t the only member of the Atherton family celebrating this weekend. Sister Rachel also tasted victory as she won the Women’s event in New York.

Rachel won in a time of 2:49.85, to finish sixth overall despite missing two rounds of competition with a shoulder injury. Sabrina Jonnier took the overall crown as she finished eighth in Windham.
