Gold Coast, Queensland, Friday July 9, 2010: DAY-ONE of Mick Fanning’s Red Bull Junior Surf Masters saw a selection of Australia’s best junior surf talent battle each other and the elements in the ‘Trials’ round of the competition, with eight surfers today advancing to the weekend’s all important final round.
Running at the beaches in front of Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, The 2010 Red Bull Junior Surf Masters will conclude on Sunday, with two more action packed days ahead stacked full of surfing, music and with the man himself - Mick Fanning casting an eye over Australia’s next crop of surfing champions. Today saw 48 invitees, surf in the ‘trials’ round, with the surviving eight competitors advancing to the ‘finals’ where they will now face the might of 12 superstar wildcards hand picked by Mick Fanning himself.
Advancing today was Ice Pereira-Ryan (Coolangatta, Qld), James Woods (Coolangatta, Qld), Oscar Scanes (Old Bar, NSW), Sam Wrench (Ulladulla, NSW), Brent Savage (Casuarina, NSW), Darcy Phillips (North Stradbroke Island, Qld), Wade Carmichael (Avoca, NSW) and Josh Menger (Dicky Beach, Qld). With New South Wales and Queensland competitors making up the field, the weekend’s showdown is shaping up with a distinct ‘Origin’ flavour. Wade Carmichael (Avoca, NSW) put the awaiting Mick Fanning Wildcards on notice with his opening day performance, winning both his opening round and his quarter final encounter.
Coming out of the gates firing, Carmichael posted the day’s highest combined two-wave heat total of 15.50 (out of a possible 20) in round two, which included and excellent 8.00 (out of a possible 10) on his very first wave.
“It was really tough out there today, but the forecast is supposed to get better for the finals, so fingers crossed we get some good waves,” said Carmichael. “It’s nice to get through that heat and get into the business end of competition,” he said.
However, Carmichael and his fellow qualifiers from today will have their work cut out for them over the weekend with some of the highest profile junior surfers in the world awaiting their arrival in the finals including the likes of current ASP Australasia Pro Junior Men’s ratings leader Mitch Crews (Currumbin, Qld), Chris Friend (Alexandra Headland, Qld), Chris Salisbury (Newport, NSW), Davey Cathels (Narrabeen, NSW) Ryan Callinan (Merewether, NSW) and Matt Banting (Port Macquarie, NSW).
Stoked to give something back to the groms, Mick Fanning will be attending the Trials and Finals to show his support and also check out who the next big name in surfing will be! Already who’s who of junior surfers have earned a place in the Trials, including Jack Freestone, Chris Friend, Hayden Welsh and Tim Macdonald. In all, 48 junior surfers from NSW, QLD, VIC, WA and SA have been invited to compete in the Trials and will battle it out for one of 8 spots in the Finals and the chance to go head-to-head with 12 of the best pro junior surfers in Australia, hand-picked by Mick Fanning.
As well as all the action on the surf, there will be plenty of entertainment to get the crowd really going with live music and DJ sets. Sydney rock/pop band The Take and Brisbane indie sensation Yves Klein Blue will take to the stage right on the beach for free live sets!
