Local mixmaster DJ Typhonic played a whirlwind set to edge out the competition and take the top prize in the Red Bull Thre3style comp this weekend.
The international DJ contest has just one key rule – DJs have to rock the house by playing a selection of at least three genres or styles of music in their 15-minute sets. Typhonic was one of eight of Sydney‟s top local DJs showcasing their skills in front of a pumped crowd at new Surry Hills hotspot, Upstairs Beresford.
The innovative battle format of the contest rocked the party and showcased some of Sydney‟s best local talent, but it was DJ Typhonic who really got the crowd going with his smooth delivery, mixing six different genres including funk, hip hop, drum and bass, ghetto tech, juke and dubstep.
On the Sydney judging panel was DJ mix master Sampology and FBI Radio's Music Director Dan Zilber. With more than a keen ear between them for what makes for a good set, the panel were seriously impressed by the talent shown, as were the crowd. Appreciative of the opportunity Red Bull Thre3style has provided him to show off his talent, Typhonic said: “It gives DJs a chance to do what they do best - make people dance. Playing to such a packed house gives such great exposure and opens you up to a wider fan base."

Not only does Red Bull Thre3style give DJs a platform to get noticed, but as the winning competitor from the Sydney qualifier, DJ Typhonic took home a cool $1,000 in cash and gained a place in the national final. The final will be held at Home in Sydney on October 14th, where Typhonic will compete with leading DJ talent from the Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth qualifiers of Red Bull Thre3style, which are being held across August and September. The overall winner will then represent Australia in the World Final in Vancouver, Canada in December.
DJ Typhonic is gearing up for the final and is stoked he gets a chance to mix it all the way to Vancouver, but for now, he's enjoying his local win. “Due to the final being in Sydney I„ll need to come up with a new set that no one has seen yet. I want people to experience something fresh and be blown away.”
Red Bull Thre3Style continues this coming Saturday 27th August at The Billboard which will host the Melbourne qualifier. Catch headliner DJ Nick Foley and Melbourne's best DJs vying for the top spot.
