It was one of the biggest parties Perth has seen since AFL bad boy Ben Cousins left town, and the 190-strong capacity crowd weren't left disappointed as niche venue The Bird played host to a bike competition like no other.
Forget BMX bandits, downhill mountainbikers or freestyle, this event was for the fixie kids - a live art exhibition with a twist. Four design students, hand picked by the John West of WA bike shops, Rusty Chain, had two hours to complete their unique designs of plain
white fixie bikes gifted to them a week earlier.
As DJs filled the venue with sounds, the crowd revolved around the artists who were scattered throughout the venue, battling for not only bragging rights but a brand new bike courtesy of those good folk at Rusty Chain.
Bikes were spray-painted, knitted, covered in diamantes and blatantly disfigured all in the name of art. And they looked good. It was the best thing to happen to bikes since Nicole Kidman removed herself from that 80s BMX.
And while the the top two designs, as voted by the punters, took home new bikes and the runners-up won prizepacks of some description, in the end, life was the real winner...
