Julian Wilson Drug Aware Pro 2011 ASP/Will H-S

Australian surfer, Julian Wilson, defeated former two-times world champion Mick Fanning and three-times ASP World Tour runner-up Joel Parkinson to claim fifth place in an event of upsets at the Drug Aware Pro.

Despite being disappointed at losing his quarter final against fellow Australian, Yadin Nicol, Wilson was philosophical about his early performances in great waves, but the smaller conditions proved to be his downfall.

"It's been a great event for me," Wilson said. "Yesterday was probably the best day of competition in my life to defeat Mick and Joel so I'm feeling good.

"Today, it was inconsistent and really it got down to who caught that one good wave and it wasn't me. Coming into Bells [Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach] in just over a week, I feel great, my form is right, I love Bells and I'm looking forward to it for sure!"

Ten-times world champion, Kelly Slater was another early casualty at the Margaret River event, which was eventually won by America's Damien Hobgood.

The women's Drug Aware Pro title also went to an American, with 18-year-old Courtney Conlogue taking the crown.
