Mate, tough season so far. How would you compare it to your other years on tour?
Yeah it hasn’t been the highlight year I was hoping for… that’s for sure. I guess I just put it down to a bit of luck not going my way. I feel my surfing is good; just been unlucky when it comes to waves in heats and also tight calls. But that's the way it goes sometimes.
How's the injury front? Heard your neck has been playing up a bit...
Yeah it's not the best but I'm dealing with it. I haven't been able to train the same as I normally would but I'm still surfing so that's good and I wouldn’t blame the injury on my results.
Can you put the results down to anything in particular or is shit just not going your way?
A bit of it has to do with shit not going my way but you create your own luck, I believe. It's been my worst year but I'm still in the top 10 so life isn't so bad. And I’m gunning for an event win before the end of the season.
You seem to be surfing pretty good but getting some dodgy waves...
Yeah, I guess when I have had bad waves I haven't been super motivated to get out there. But I know if I want to get back to the top, I have to turn it around.
Is there one highlight? Something? Anything?
I think when I have put an event together my surfing has spoken for itself. I think Bells was probably the best I have surfed all year but I just came up short in the final against Parko. I had another second at J-Bay. When you get that close and don’t get the win it can kinda zap your momentum.
It's a hectic end of season schedule and a few boys are skipping Haleiwa for a rest. You in the same boat?
Yeah, it's been really long. I think I'll enjoy some time off and relax at home. I would love to have done them all but I have to think about the rig and making sure it’s golden for 2012.
You're a pretty competitive dude, what are your plans for the final few Pros now the pressure is off a bit?
Knee-cap Owen, Tonya Harding-style! Hahaha. Nah, I'm just going to try and put a few events together and get some confidence back to start the next year strong.
What have you made of Jules' debut season and those battles with Parko?
Julian has really found his feet on the past few events. Those two had a good rivalry at Trestles. It's great to watch.. I like the way Julian is really starting to let it fly now.
Have you considered taking up championship lawn bowls?
Am I that old? Haha. Funny thing is, I love playing barefoot lawn bowls. Such good fun in summer with a beer.
Anything else doing brother? Introducing snake boards to surfing? Something?
I'm working on producing a new quiver line for next year so that is really exciting… might have to work a snake board into the mix. Maybe a surfboard version of the old Ben Lexcen winged skateboard. Seriously though, I’m loving working on new boards with different shapers, it’s really given me a new lease on life when it's coming to my surfing. Just gotta figure it out and hopefully the big results will follow.
Good luck over there, mate!
Thanks!
