History was made in Rogla, Slovenia last week as pro–snowboarder Marko Grilc pulled big air to jump over snowmobile rider Ross Mercer for Red Bull Double Air.
High daytime temperatures and melting snow meant that is was difficult for the riders to test a big jump before the event. The actual jump then had to be postponed due to a lack of wind speed, which hindered Grilc’s ability to pull off a big enough jump.
However, the Slovenian’s prayers were answered the next day as the wind picked up, and the jump was back on. After a few trial runs with both riders jumping straight, the tricks began to come out – Grilc pulling off a Back Side Ten, Double Cork and Cab Nine over Mercer’s Superman, Can Can and Tsunami.
On several occasions the two riders’ hands almost touched, and local boy Grilc was clearly delighted with the jump.
“That was really crazy! I cannot believe we did it,” he said. “It’s something that until now no one has tackled, so I really wanted to be the first!
“I constantly compete and do projects abroad, often far from friends, so I really wanted to do this at home. Ross is one of the best snowmobile riders in the world, who can easily turn a somersault, so you can trust him 100%.”
Mercer was also delighted with the role he played in Grilc’s homecoming: “I’m super excited! I’ve never done anything like this before and I really enjoyed it, the hill was perfectly prepared.
“Because of the soft snow, my end slightly tilted, which could have been a problem when we introduced complex tricks, but Marko did a perfect job and we succeeded.”
