Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios boss John Lasseter talks us through a key scene in his new automotive sequel Cars 2… and has a few words of thanks for Red Bull for keeping the crew animated....
While it’s well known that Red Bull gives you wings, it’s not so well known that it also gives you wheels. According to director John Lasseter, Cars 2 wouldn’t have been made without our help, so it was with no small amount of pleasure that we sat down for a chat with the animation genius as he talked us through a key scene in his latest movie…
“First of all, I just want to say that I’m so excited that I’m on RedBull.com because Red Bull was so important in the making of this film – and not just the drinking and the keeping us awake!
“When we went on our very first research trip for Cars 2, we wanted to go to a great Formula One race. We went to Milan in Italy and the Red Bull Racing team was so generous to us. They just opened their doors and we got to see everything in the pit area. Cars 2 wouldn’t have been made without Red Bull’s help, the whole experience was very informative – and also in the German version of the film we have Sebastian Vettel doing one of the voices, we were so excited about that.”
“This scene in Cars 2 is the first race of the World Grand Prix and it’s a street race taking place in Tokyo, Japan. We were inspired by the Singapore Grand Prix where they do a night race right through the streets but we thought it would be great fun to go right down the Ginza (district in Tokyo).
“We wanted to celebrate the uniqueness of all the places we visited in this movie and we ‘Carified’ Tokyo for this sequence and it was so much fun to bring those characters and the city alive like that.
“Wrapped around the World Grand Prix there’s a conspiracy going on and Mater [http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Mater] [the dim tow truck pal of the film’s star Lightning McQueen – is in the wrong place at the wrong time after he’s mistaken for an American spy by a pair of British spy cars, Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell (Michael Caine and Emily Mortimer). So he gets caught up in this huge conspiracy but none of his friends, who are used to him telling tall tales, believe him.
“This scene here is where the British spies are starting to recognise that Mater is in trouble, so they start helping him to get away from the bad guys. The bad guys in our world are called Lemons – in the UK, they’re called Bangers. They’re the cars that don’t really work right and aren’t reliable. They’re after Mater and the spy cars are trying to help him out all the way though this scene.”
Cars 2 is released everywhere on July 22.
