Three-time ASP World Tour champion Andy Irons is set to join last year’s Tour winner Mick Fanning and a host of other stars in the Breaka Burleigh Pro WQS event in Queensland, Australia later this month.
Hawaii-based Irons, who won the Tour three years running from 2002–4, joins Australian Fanning at the four-star event in Burleigh Heads from February 17–22.
“To have world-class surfers like Mick Fanning, Occy [Mark Occhilupo, 1999 Tour champion, who is coming out of retirement to compete] and now Andy Irons all competing in one of the world’s best waves, you can’t go wrong,” said Burleigh Pro director Scott Gillies.
The Burleigh event will serve as a useful taster of the surfing to come when the ASP World Tour begins at the end of February, also on the Gold Coast, with the Quiksilver Pro.
