Most people try to make New Year’s Eve as memorable as possible. But the protagonists in Red Bull: New Year. No Limits ensure no one can ever forget them. Robbie Maddison, Rhys Millen and Travis Pastrana: Stand up and be counted.

This December 31 will see the third Red Bull: New Year. No Limits event. The first, in 2007, was to feature an attempt by drift star Rhys Millen to backflip a truck for the first time until he hurt his back in training, leaving Robbie Maddison (see below) as the sole attraction.

322...

At New Year. No Limits in 2007, Robbie Maddison attempted to jump the length of an American football field (360ft/109m), but despite wind preventing him from reaching that goal as he soared 60ft (18m) through the air, he smashed the late Evel Knievel’s Caesars Palace New Year jump record – set exactly 40 years previously, on December 31, 1967 – with a 322ft (98.34m) jump. Not satisfied, Maddo broke his own record three months later in his homeland of Australia, at Crusty Demons Night Of World Records in Melbourne, jumping 342ft (104.42m) and then yet further with just a shade under 351ft (106.98m). Watch his original record at New Year. No Limits here.

Unbowed by his year one setback, Rhys returned in 2008 for the second edition in Las Vegas and managed to flip his offroad vehicle at exactly 36mph (58kph) a distance of 80ft (24m) at a height of 50ft (15m), though a crash landing meant anxious moments for his onlooking family and friends until he emerged – with zero injuries. Watch Rhys’s amazing flip here.

Last year, Robbie Maddison was again one of the stars of the show in Las Vegas, jumping up a ramp onto a 96ft (29m) tall and 40ft (12m) deep replica of Paris’s Arc de Triomphe. The jump itself was actually greater at 105ft (32m), and the drop back to the ramp a cool 60ft (18m), during which Robbie landed hard and badly cut his hand. “I just cheated death again,” said the Australian, matter-of-factly. Watch Maddo give the reaper the runaround here.

2008/9...

This year, another very special record is in the sights of Travis Pastrana, as he attempts to jump further than anyone has ever attempted in a rally car. The event, taking place at Long Beach, near Los Angeles, will see Travis jump from Pine Street Pier onto a floating barge. The current record is 171ft (60m). Travis thinks he can double it. Watch him here, practising to do just that.

300,000...

Almost a third of a million people watched the action last year, and that was just the numbers in Vegas itself. Because the event is transmitted live on the ESPN TV network, millions more watch Red Bull: New Year. No Limits each December 31.

99.00...

Travis is the undisputed king of the X Games. His first gold medal came in 1999 when he scored a record 99.00pts to win on his FMX bike. He’s now won a total of nine FMX golds. He also has one X Games gold medal, one silver and one bronze in the rally discipline… that is multi-talented.

199...

You couldn’t always say it’s been 100 per cent lucky – this is a man whose medical record is a litany of sprains, breaks, tears and comas – but this is always Travis Pastrana’s number, whether it be on bike, car or monster truck – and it will be on his custom Subaru Impreza rally car during this year’s attempt. Just how lucky will it be? Find out soon!
