Red Bull Ajo Motorsport rider Marc Marquez has strengthened his grip on the 125cc world championship after he secured his fifth straight victory at the Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland.
The Spaniard enjoyed a close tussle with fellow countryman Pol Espargaró before a late crash ended his challenge and handed Marquez a comfortable win. The 17-year-old now holds a 26-point lead over Espargaró in the overall standings.
Conditions at the start of the race were hard to read with the wet track fast drying out. And although home riders Jonas Folger and Marcel Schrötter – on full wet tyres – opened up an early lead, Marquez and Espargaró were in front by lap six.
The pair then battled it out for first place while growing the distance between themselves and the rest of the field. The fight at the front remained aggressive and Marquez experienced a momentary wobble on his Derbi machine.
With two laps to go and Espargaró in front the Tuenti Racing rider’s rear tyre touched the grass on the side of the track and he was thrown from his bike, Márquez only very narrowly avoiding being taken out as well. The 19-year-old was unable to restart his bike allowing his rival to take victory by 17.578 seconds.
Behind Marquez, Japanese rider Tomoyoshi Koyama took second while German Sandro Cortese completed the podium on his home grand prix.
