Thomas Morgenstern won the final stage of the Four Hills Tournament in Bischoshofen, Austria, while his compatriot Andreas Kofler took the overall title by finishing fourth.
Morgenstern jumped 133 metres and 136 metres to score a winning 264.7 points and complete his first FIS World Cup win in almost two years. Veterans Janne Ahonen (264) of Finland and Simon Ammann (261.5) won silver and bronze in the final event of the tournament.
Five-time winner Ahonen also finished overall runner-up with last year’s winner Wolfgang Loitzl third overall.
But it was nothing compared to Kofler's comeback: the 25-year-old failed to event qualify for Bischofshofen last year but this year saw him win in Oberstdorf and came fourth in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Innsbruck on the way to the biggest triumph of his career.
But pre-event favourite Gregor Schlierenzauer’s fortunes also fluctuated dramatically through the tournament. The teenager has become a huge star in his homeland after winning the Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Innsbruck rounds of the Four Hills events, but this time he had to settle for sixth place. It meant he finished just off the overall podium in fourth place and also relinquished his lead in the World Cup to Ammann.
Luckily he only has to wait until Friday to hit back as the action moves to Tauplitz/Bad Mitterndorf in Austria.
