April 24 saw the Red Bull Soundclash brought to life in Auckland, New Zealand, in what was an absolutely outstanding display by the bands The Mint Chicks and King Kapisi. The groups had the audience literally screaming for more.

Had you been in the front row at this event you probably would have needed a towel and possibly even some band aids. Both bands were musically outstanding, ripping through a multitude of various songs that were remixed, mashed up and, at times, given brutal makeovers to shape them into what could only be described as ‘Musical Madness'.

The Mint Chicks let loose, spraying fans with multiple bottles of champagne, donning ski masks and taking guitars and microphones into the crowd in an amazing performance that left everybody screaming for more. They pulled King Kapisi tracks to pieces, then rebuilding them into totally new genres with a generous injection of their unique punk-pop sound.

King Kapisi in the other corner did nothing to disappoint. Right from the get-go he was his usual confident self, backed by an amazing live band that stayed on the ball with every track. Adding hip hop flavour and flowing rhymes to every song he played, King Kapisi brought his A game to this showdown and really gave the Mint Chicks a challenge to win the crowd favour.

Both bands had jokers up their sleeves. Kapisi brought to the stage long-time friend and national hip hop legend Che Fu; together they flowed through Che’s No 1 hit ‘Chains’, which the crowd lapped up. The Mint Chicks successfully delivered with an incredible and surprise performance by a huge New Zealand music icon, Chris Knox. The singer ripped half his clothes off, climbed across the crowd to the opposite stage mid-song and literally ate his microphone.

For the record, unbelievably after two extra applause-o-metre cheer-offs by the crowd, the battle for supremacy had to be called a draw as the bands achieved the same decibel ratings twice in a row after an initial points draw.
