Dani Pedrosa continued his superb recent form by claiming his fourth pole position of the season ahead of Sunday’s Sammarinese MotoGP in Misano.
The Spaniard won in Indianapolis last week to narrow the gap on championship leader Jorge Lorenzo and came out on top in another duel with his compatriot in qualifying for the 12th round of the competition.
'I've never won two MotoGPs in a row – I want to go for it' Dani
A blistering final lap of the hour-long qualifying session saw Pedrosa, who was quickest in Friday’s practice, clock a time of 1’33.94s to cement his place at the top of the timesheet.
Lorenzo had taken the lead from Pedrosa with only 10 minutes of the practice session remaining, but the Yamaha rider eventually ended up 0.308s off Pedrosa after his rival pushed back in front.
Pedrosa is aiming to secure a second successive MotoGP win, something that he has not achieved before, but which would crank up the pressure on Lorenzo.
“I’m happy to be on pole position because we were strong throughout practice and things have gone according to plan so far this weekend," he said.
"We are doing a very good job at the moment, improving at every round and now we have the chance to have another good race. I’ve never won two MotoGP races in a row and this is a good challenge for me – I really want to go for it."
Ducati rider Casey Stoner completed the front row, while 2009 champion Valentino Rossi qualified fourth for his home race.
Pedrosa’s Honda team-mate, Andrea Dovizioso, will start from the third row on the grid after finishing eighth in qualifying.
