Daron Rahlves drew on every ounce of his considerable experience as an Olympic-standard skier to win the first Red Bull Hüttenrallye in St Anton, Austria, yesterday.

The 37-year-old dominated from the start, coming through a field of international professionals and brave amateurs to win the Freeski Six Cross competition. The women’s race was won by 18-year-old Fanny Smith of Switzerland, fresh from her first Skiercross World Cup victory in San Candido.

In total, 48 men and 12 women took on the Red Bull Hüttenrallye course which took them through tight turns and terrific jumps as they made their way down to the final jump in front of the Galzbigbahn, a few metres from the scene of the 2001 Alpine Ski World Championships.

"My strategy was to go hard at it right from the start and go head-to-head with my opponents. That’s how I like it,” said a beaming Daron Rahlves. “It’s great to start the season with a win and winning here in St Anton is unique.”
