In our regular series tracking the current whereabouts of Australia’s past Red Bull Music Academy participants, we touch base with Melburnian DJ/producer/promoter Eden Krumins, aka DJ Cubist/Dr. No.
Name?
Eden Krumins aka DJ Cubist/Dr. No.
Skills?
DJ, Producer.
Hometown?
Melbourne, Australia.
Which session of RBMA did you attend?
Toronto, 2007.
What expectations did you have before participating in the Academy and how did that compare to the reality of actually participating?
I went into RBMA wanting to write drum’n’bass and only d’n’b. I wasn't really into much else at the time. I came out with more of an open mind. Looking at music more universally again. Not just genre specific.
Is there a particular moment or event that stands out for you from your RBMA experience, and why?
I think working in the studio with Theo Parrish. Witnessing such raw creativity at work was inspiring. Also, listening to Benji B talk about music. His selection and outlook on music has influenced me a lot for my new club night – RAW.
Which fellow participants stood out to you as obviously destined for bigger things, and have they actually gone on to great success since?
Hudson Mohawke stood out as a highly talented guy yet so humble. He actually got signed to Warp records at RBMA after one of the lecturers Steve Beckett, co-founder of Warp, heard Hudson's music. It was really quite surreal.
What influence did attending the Academy have on your musical endeavours since?
I think listening to such a diverse cross section of artists at RBMA inspired me to be more independent with my creative process and encouraged me to not follow musical trends.
What projects do you currently have on the boil?
Myself and Scotty Hinds aka Minister are about to release our 140bpm project – Dr. No + Minister EP. Look out for the first single and video clip Oh My Didays. I'm hosting a free mini production seminar in Melbourne, hoping to share my knowledge on production with anyone who's interested. I've also started a new night RAW – focused on the more experimental side of bass music. Plus, writing DnB and running drum’n’bass club night WOBBLE.
