We get the lowdown on the current whereabouts of Australia’s past Red Bull Music Academy participants.
Name?
Sofie Loizou (also surreptitiously known as Anomie).
Skills?
Composer, Producer and DJ.
Home?
Sydney, Australia
Which session of Red Bull Music Academy did you attend?
Cape Town, 2003.
What expectations did you have before participating in the Academy and how did that compare to the reality of actually participating?
I had very few expectations, as I knew no one that had actually attended personally and didn’t really expect to make the cut.
Is there a particular moment or event that stands out for you from your Academy experience, and why?
I have so many memories, the trip to the township for an MC Battle, getting treasured advice from Bob Moog, but the one I keep going back to was my first ever DJ gig in Cape Town. I was trialling some new DJing software and it was clunky as hell. I kept thinking the whole thing was going to be a disaster, but it turned out great, and I have been doing it ever since.
Which fellow participants stood out to you as obviously destined for bigger things, and have they actually gone on to great success since?
I guess I expected big things from everyone there, as they were all such talented and driven individuals. I was blown away when I heard Nathi’s (Blackcoffee - South Africa) music. Dawid Szczesny (Poland) and Jneiro Jarel (USA) were also standouts. If you haven’t heard of these artists it would be well worth the effort checking them out.
What influence did attending the Academy have on your musical endeavours since?
The Academy has impacted in unexpected ways, at first it gave me the courage to consider myself an artist, when before I just thought of myself as a “producer”. It also gave me the impetus to get skilled in the art of live performance, which has led me to travel the world. And finally it gave me a connection to a bunch of like minded individuals, of which I have maintained, and through my involvement in the Academy on a local level tried to lead by example, making opportunities to connect others who are like-minded.
What projects do you currently have on the boil?
I have an EP coming out on June 1 2012 on Australian label Sub Continental Dub under the pseudonym Anomie and a vinyl release on Radical Nature records in August 2012. I am also touring Europe again this year including Outlook Festival in Croatia in September. To add a twist, I am also playing a role in the development of a Contemporary Opera work with a showing in Alice Springs in June 2012.
