After taking over the Spanish capital of Madrid over two fortnight long terms through October and November 2011, Red Bull Music Academy 2012 will be setting up camp in New York City from September 30 to November 2 – and prospective participants have until Monday April 2 to get their applications in for what Australia’s 2011 alumnus Phoebe Kiddo dubbed “school camp for gifted mutants”.
“The Red Bull Music Academy is the most progressive entity of music education. I wanna be chosen for this!” – Ahmir ‘?uestlove’ Thompson, The Roots.
Since kicking off in Berlin in 1998, this near mythical musical finishing school has traversed the globe, from London to Melbourne, Cape Town to Rome, bringing like-minded and forward-thinking producers, instrumentalists, vocalists and DJs from every conceivable genre together for intensive semesters of workshops, concerts, club nights and studio time which relegate sleep from one of life’s necessities to an optional extra. Some of the Academy’s most famous graduates so far include Flying Lotus (Melbourne, 2006), Katy B (London, 2010), Hudson Mohawke (Toronto, 2007) and Onra (Barcelona, 2008), while Erykah Badu, Nile Rodgers, RZA, Bootsy Collins, Peaches, Scuba and Trevor Horn are just some of the musical legends to have imparted their wisdom on lucky participants – and that was just in Madrid.
RBMA Info Sessions have taken place across Australia already in 2012, with US turntablist Cut Chemist, NZ drummer/producer/DJ Julien Dyne and UK hip hop icon Roots Manuva giving local punters a small taste of what the Academy proper is all about. Now all aspiring music makers who’ll be 21-years-old before September 30, 2012 are invited to submit their application with a selection of their best tracks for the chance to be one of the lucky 60 selected to travel to New York City for what theMusic.com.au declared of RBMA Madrid 2011 as “musical paradise”.
