Red Bull Salzburg got their Europa League campaign underway with defeat last night as David Silva scored his first goal for Manchester City.
The World Cup-winner took just eight minutes to strike after some neat work from Jô. The Brazilian then turned goalscorer in the second half as he wrapped up the game for the visitors, following up Gerhard Tremmel’s save to grab his first goal for the club in two years.
The home side’s best period of play came in the final 15 minutes of the first half as they threatened to cancel out Silva’s early strike. First Ibrahim Sekagya’s 20-yard strike bounced over the head of Joe Hart and hit the bar, before Joaquin Boghossian just failed to make contact with a ball across the six-yard box.
Salzburg won all of their group stage games in the competition last season but after the break City took control and could have scored more than the two they managed. After the game, coach Huub Stevens lamented his side’s lacklustre start.
“We did not start very well, and if you are not on top of your game in the first 10 minutes against a team such as Manchester City, it is always going to be a struggle,” he said. “We gave City too much space, and they had too much room to get at our defence."
Next up for the Red Bulls is a trip to Poland on September 30 to face Lech Poznan.
