Pranksters BLUEJU!CE and Red Bull formed a formidable partnership on said trip, frontmen Jake and Stav attributing their ability to stay somewhat coherent to their little friend with wings. And in a nod of respect, BLUEJU!CE will release the Shock clip exclusively on redbull.com.au next week.
Ironically, the pair claims the video isn’t as shocking as their most recent release, Act Yr Age, which featured Jake pashing an eldery grandmother.
The energetic vocalist, who could also be described as hyperactive and devoid of shame, admitted to enjoying the brief but plentiful romance. And while BLUEJU!CE has built a reputation as one of the country’s best live acts with on-stage antics that border on dangerous, Jake and Stav are hoping a meticulous recording process - which involved more horses, women and men that it took to put humpty dumpty together again – will see the Sydney lads go from support to headline acts. They’re on a mammoth regional tour as we speak and will play Big Day Out.
They pulled in two of drummer James Hauptmann’s siblings and Jake’s sister to give the album and their live shows a fuller sound. And with a 1959 Cadillac and Hunter S. Thompson get-up, their new video Shock isn’t shy of action either.
“I should say up front that I thought going to the USA to make two film clips in the space of five days was insane. I maintain I was correct,” says Jake, who with Stav and a film crew travelled the usual four hours from LA to Vegas in Guinness World Record slowest time of 11 hours.
They attributed the length of the trip to IHOP (International House of Pancakes) stops and the car running out of fuel on their director’s watch.
The film clip is the pair’s even more twisted take on cult movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Stav says the making of was even more outlandish then the finished product - using girls they found on Craigslist as models and getting away with the kind of antics in a casino that make The Hangover look like brunch.
“We shot it in a 24-hour period and it got pretty messed up,” said Stav, who was on his way to swim with some dolphins in Coffs Harbour while on the Sizzling 2012 tour with Aston Shuffle.
“We stayed awake with less assistance than you might expect… I guess there was just a lot of adrenaline and a lot of Red Bull. Haha.
“And in the end, Jake and I find ourselves in a little chapel where Michael Jordan and Britney Spears were married – not to one another!”
BLUEJU!CE are currently touring the east coast as part of Sizzling 2012 and will play the Big Day Out festival with an all-new and improved, video-enhanced set featuring a tribute to anti-cult actress Jodie Foster.
