FIRST it was the X-Fighters, then came the graffiti artists. Now, Kieran Reilly and a throng of the country’s best skaters will have their turn running riot on Sydney’s Cockatoo Island for the finale of the Skate Boarding Australia Pro/AM Tour.
The $10,000 invitational will see the likes of international rising star Reilly go head-to-head with Shane Azar, while a 2011 Aussie champion from the year’s tour will also be crowned.
Kieran’s already taken a look at the course, which covers tech to burl, right angles and curves. And the Kempsey lad, who just returned from a rolling tour of America with Azar and the Volcom crew, likes what he sees.
“They’ve invited like a bunch of 40 skaters and we just got to battle it out and win some money. We even get to catch a ferry there – I’m pumped,” Kieran says. “I saw the course a few weeks ago and it looks good – mainly street with a couple of quarter pipes there
“Jay Duncan, Scott Stanley, Chima Ferguson, Alex Campbell and a heap of other guys are gonna be there. It’ll be super fun.
“I’m pumped to be invited. I’ll rock up on the day and if I’m feeling good, I’ll try and get the cash but if I’m not, I’ll have some fun and do some cool tricks and stuff.”
Industry types will be there, so for the likes of 2011 stand-outs Sam Giles and Tommy Fynn, there’s more at stake then just one of those giant plastic cheques.
“You can launch your career at these sort of things,” says Kieran, scouted at a contest as a 10-year-old.“You just gotta get out there and skate and it’s gonna be a super fun contest. I’m looking forward to seeing what the other guys can do.
“This is definitely one of the biggest Australia contests, and putting the cash up for grabs is good, because you don’t really get that much in Australia. It’s awesome.
“I can’t wait to get the ferry out there!”
The Cockatoo Island Pro/AM is the culmination of the SBA's first ever national tour, taking competitive skateboarding from underground to above water.
The competition is being held as part of the Outpost Project on Cockatoo Island on Saturday 10 December, from midday.
