If you hear Scotty James say he hasn’t done anything exciting lately, nine times out of 10 you can be guaranteed he has.
So when the Olympic snowboarder told us this week that “I haven’t done anything exciting since last time we spoke”, we instantly translated that into to a “hell yeah, I’ve been having some fun”.
Like his 18th birthday a few weeks back for instance, where his backyard was jammed with so many people last that he could have set a Guinness World Record for the widest abuse of fire safety standards at a house party.
“Ah, yeah. That was pretty crazy,” he says. “It was awesome – like a night club. We had a massive marquee, all the Red Bull tables, fridges and bars, a photo booth and they rolled out a heap of the special edition Red Bulls, which were sooo good.
“Mum reckons at its peak it got to about 250 people… But that was only for a short amount of time. For the rest of the night there were probably only 180?"
The kid knows how to throw a party and the fact it didn’t end up on Today Tonight is a victory in itself.
“And they surprised me with this really sick ice sculpture of myself, which was really cool,” he continues.
“It wasn’t quite life size but it was pretty close to it. So yeah, that was a pretty good party.”
Given Scotty has spent the past four years of his life travelling the world, snowboarding and lavishing in gifts from myriad sponsors, when faced with the task of buying presents for him, making the decision became harder than being forced to choose between watching Being Lara Bingle, The Shire or death.
“Haha. Well, I didn’t ask anything more from the parents because they were cool enough to let me have as many people as we had here,” Scotty says.
“But I’ll probably buy myself something killer with all the money I got from the party.”
What? You charged admission?
“I probably should have,” he says.
“Nah, a heap of people gave me money and cards and things. There are more benefits than meet the eye from a party that big. I can’t wait for my 21st!”
Other than that, a little school work and the odd trip to Mt Hotham, sure, Scotty hasn’t been up to anything else that exciting.
“Oh, I actually drove up to NSW and went out back-countrying with a few of the other Aussie riders and a photographer the other week,” Scotty says.
“We camped out overnight out by Charlotte Path, which was really, really, cold. But it was actually a super fun experience. We weren’t shooting for anything in particular we just wanted to go out there for some fun and explore. But I’m sure some of the shots will end up in a magazine at some stage. I hope so. It was awesome.”
Scotty shoots off to New Zealand this month for the start of the 2012-13 season before heading over to the US for the winter.
