Jean-Eric Vergne has stretched his lead at the top of the Cooper Tires British F3 championship to 104 points after securing his 11th win of the season at Thruxton, UK.

After winning the morning’s sprint race Vergne was again on pole, however he didn’t enjoy the best of starts. Team-mate James Calado outbreaking the Frenchman in the Club chicane at the end of the second lap to snatch the lead.

'Today was a good race, it’s always great to win like this, with a really great car' – Vergne

He wasn’t in the lead for long though as Vergne gained his revenge the very next time the pair entered Club. After that – and despite a lengthy safety car period – it was plain sailing for the 20-year-old, who is now the undoubted favourite for the overall title.

“A few more points at Silverstone and the title is possible,” said a delighted Vergne. “Today was a good race, it’s always great to win like this, with a really great car.”

Behind Vergne, Calado faded to finish third behind Ollie Webb. Webb’s excellent form prevented a lock-out of the top four positions by Carlin as Adriano Buzaid and Rupert Svendsen-Cook came in fourth and fifth.

Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz Jr. enjoyed an impressive second race in the second round of the Formula BMW Europe series in Hungary last weekend. After starting from second on the grid the young Spaniard briefly led the race after taking eventual winner Jack Harvey with the move of the race as the pair went into the first corner.

Unfortunately, despite a close battle with Harvey and Robin Frijns he had to settle for third – although that meant he finished the race as the top rookie.

"At the start I just improvised and had to try something different if I was to win the race,” said Sainz Jr. “It didn’t work, so perhaps next time I shall try something different. I would have liked to be second but a place on the podium is not so bad. It is my first year and I am still learning.”
