Scotty James at the World Heli Champs Red Bull Content Pool

Another early morning start yesterday. Had an awesome day up there and got to do some things that I wouldn't get to do every day. I started off the day by getting up at 5:30 and preparing all my stuff for the final day of flying. I drove about 30 mins out to the end of lake Hawea where there was a barge which had the helicopters on it waiting for us.

I realised I was in a bit of strife and there was no way of backing out

It was a huge surprise and everyone was really excited. Once the barge left the dock they started flying people up to where the contest was going to run. I was pretty exited to get up there and see what the terrain was going to be like. I had the chance to get about 40 minutes to have a really good look at the mountain and got the binoculars out to see all the detail in the snow and shoots that I was hoping to do.

I was feeling confident about the lines and shoot I had chosen to ride until I actually got down there and realised I was in a bit of strife and there was no way of backing out. I ended up having to unstrap my board and try to hike out of the dangerous cliff face I was sitting on. I was feeling pretty scared and worried that I wasn't going to be able to get out of the situation safely.

I ended up being fortunate enough to get out of there with no injury, but it wasn't easy as the rocks underneath the snow were really icy and hard to get a grip on. After all the dramas and scary moments during this contest I ended up having an amazing time and learnt a lot of new things about the mountain, it was a great experience and I am looking forward to the 2012 World Heli Challenge next year. I will find out the results next thursday at the Gala dinner night at the Wanaka Community Hall. I'll let you know how I go!
