On screen, Hollywood’s favourite Frenchman has been a doomed assassin, a doomed free-diver and even a doomed lion. Things don’t always seem to end well for actor Jean Reno but in his new film, 22 Bullets (L’Immortel) things don’t start so well either when his character, retired gangster Charley Mattei, is gunned down in Marseille and left for dead.
But he survives the hit and sets out on the trail of bloody revenge so he can earn the right to live in peace. "It's about taking an audience from extreme violence to the tears and extreme tenderness and making him nice,” says Reno. “He's an assassin, but by the end, it is giving you the opportunity to show the colours and paradoxes of human beings.”
If all that sounds far fetched, bear in mind it’s inspired by the true story of Marseille gangster Jacques ‘Jacky le Mat’ Imbert.
22 Bullets (L’Immortel) is released in the UK on September 3 and Germany on November 4 and you can watch our exclusive interview with Jean Reno on Red Bull Web TV today. Drum roll please…
