Craig Anderson has been doing the rounds on the Moto X and Super X circuits for almost three-quarters of his life. The 12-time Australian champion went straight into competing at age eight, racking up 11 junior Moto X championships and winning a prestigious race in the US.

After going pro at age 16, Anderson went straight into the open class the following year and it didn’t take long for the young man from the Hunter Valley to mark his territory – in 1996 he raced to second place in the Moto X, Super X and four-stroke championships, and went on to win all three championships in both 1997 and 1998.

He would replicate this feat and win the trifecta again in 2002, coming back from a knee reconstruction and glandular fever. After a few more years of wins and injuries, 2006 saw the 28-year-old take his 12th Australian championship when he was ranked first in the Moto X.

If Super X is a sprint, says Anderson, now 30, then Moto X is more like a marathon, and he says he’s got plenty left in him to race in both events. Anderson swears he doesn’t have a preference for either the fast-paced Super X, held at night in stadiums and showgrounds, or the gruelling outdoor Moto X.

“In Super X, your heart rate is up at around 200 beats per minute, whereas for Moto X it’s more like 180 to 190 so a little bit easier, but still pretty hard,” he says.

“All the top guys are the same speed, size and fitness as me, that’s where the mental game really comes into it. I just try to stay relaxed and have a clear mind and then rock up at the start ready to just go for it.”
