WORLD CHAMP MICK FANNING TO MENTOR YOUNG SURFERS

Kicking off this Friday, 11th January 2008, the first ever Red Bull World Qualifying Series (WQS) Selection Camp will be taking place in NSW, where 19 talented junior surfers from around the world, including four young Aussies, will have the rare opportunity to be coached and mentored by professionals such as recently crowned world champion, Mick Fanning.
Being held from 11th to 16th of January at the Surfing Australia High Performance Centre in Casuarina on the far north coast of NSW, this ‘invite only’ camp is the first event of its kind. This will open up the doors for junior surfers keen to become professional athletes, who until now have had limited opportunities to increase their skills and chances of having a shot at becoming a world champion.
With surfing being the largest participation sport in Australia and the nation a breeding ground for champions, it’s no wonder that Australia was chosen to host the inaugural Red Bull WQS Selection Camp.
Athletes attending the camp will be put through a vigorous training program, after which the top four athletes will be selected via a panel of experts. Each will be awarded a one year scholarship into the 2008 Red Bull WQS Program – an initiative now in its third season. This program has helped athletes such as former Aussie surfer graduate Ben Dunn reach the world tour. The scholarship includes mentoring and coaching by former WQS surfer, Andy King, and other specialists, performance management advice, access to the Red Bull Diagnostics & Training Centre in Austria, free accommodation for WQS events and more.
All athletes attending the camp will gain invaluable experience, knowledge, skills and a greater understanding of what to expect going into the WQS, not to mention words of advice from a real world champion and Aussie legend, Mick Fanning!
