For Jono Brauer speed spells success. As Australia’s reigning alpine ski champion, his burning ambition is to beat his rivals to the base of a steep ice-glazed mountain at a speed nearing the velocity of an Italian sports car.

It may sound downright nuts, but for 26-year-old Brauer skiing is the love of his life. Since his mum first clicked him into bindings at four-years-old, this determined athlete has cranked his career up to full throttle and successfully launched himself onto the world’s snowfields. “As a kid I could never get enough and I still feel the same way,” says the Thredbo raised Brauer.

Born to ski

Brauer’s talent in his early years was formidable. “Every day that I talked my mum into letting me take the day off school, I was out there on the snow,” he said. He started training overseas at age 11, travelling through countries like the Czech Republic and Austria without his parents. Brauer won his first national children’s race that very same year and his place in life was decided. He notched up a swag of local championships and then at 20, he entered his first World Cup, he’s competed every season since.

Digging for gold

Brauer is a powerhouse of ambition with his eyes set firmly on scoring the ultimate world no. 1 position and Olympic gold in 2010. " There’s a lot I want to accomplish, right now I’m throwing all of my efforts into finishing this year’s World Cup season ranked in the top 15 in the world,” said a fired up Brauer.
