Five golds, three silvers and three bronzes: the Red Bull athletes’ haul at the X Games 14 in Los Angeles. Alongside the usual suspects, some new faces also made it onto the podium last weekend.
Whether on two or four wheels, Travis Pastrana has everything under control. The latest proof of this was his victory in the Rally Car Racing event at the X Games 14. But the feeling of getting up on the highest podium step in rallying wasn’t really something new for the one-time FMX hero. As early as 2006, Travis picked up the gold medal when he beat no less than the rally World Champion Colin McRae. This year McRae’s former co-pilot Carolyn Bosley (USA) buckled up next to Pastrana and helped him win the X Games for the ninth time in total.
Second X Games gold for Ryan
Ryan Sheckler had to wait five years for this moment. The 18-year-old heart-throb bagged his second win in the Skateboard Street contest at the X Games. Back in 2003 the main headliner of the MTV reality show ‘Life of Ryan’ won gold in the Skateboard/Park discipline, making him the youngest X Games winner ever. Ryan’s winning highlights 2008: his cab flip over the bump and his flawless rail tricks.
Once again …
... in a class of his own was Daniel Dhers. The 23-year-old Venezuelan won the BMX Freestyle SuperPark event with superiority. And for Daniel it was also his second X Games triumph. Last year he collected gold in the BMX Park contest. Nobody is tricking on their BMX bike better than Dhers right now; he’s also the man to beat in the Dew Action Sports Tour. In the tour he’s leading the BMX Park overall table after two of five races, and is on the brink of winning the Dew Cup for the third time in a row following his victories in 2006 and 2007.
2 x gold in Moto X
Whoever thinks that Moto X is purely for men is wrong. Tarah Gieger from Puerto Rico won the first X Games gold in the Moto X Racing women’s contest: "It’s a lot of stress off me. I don’t have to worry about it at all for next year, because I got the first one." The answer from the Red Bull men’s camp came swiftly – from Josh Hansen, to be exact. The underdog could hardly believe his success at the sold-out Home Depot Center: "This win means everything to me. I really needed to get back on my feet and get my name back out there."
Two silvers for Ronnie
Red Bull X-Fighter Ronnie Renner (USA) also contributed his part to the ‘Red Bull medal tally’, winning silver in both the Moto X Step Up and Moto X Speed and Style events. Compatriot Tommy Clowers celebrated a bronze in the Moto X Step Up contest; likewise Shaun White in the Skate Vert, and Kevin Robinson in the BMX Big Air contests. In the final of the Moto X Freestyle event Swiss national Mat Rebeaud, overall leader in the Red Bull X-Fighters series 2008, had to concede defeat to Jeremy Lusk, but made it onto the podium with a silver medal.
